Oriental Medicine

Chinese medicine is a unique medical system with a written history that traces back more than 2,000 years and that has been practiced even longer.  Chinese medicine acknowledges that there is a vital life force called Qi that flows through all things.  In Traditional Chinese Medicine Qi (pronounced chee) is an energy which flows through the acupuncture meridians and plays a vital role in every living being.

Qi flows along pathways in the human body that correspond to the organs, muscular system and nervous system.  When the balance of this energy is disturbed due to poor diet, medication, stress, hereditary conditions, emotional issues or environmental factors it can result in pain or illness.

How Acupuncture works

Just as rivers carry water to nourish and replenish life on our planet, Qi flows through our bodies along invisible currents called meridians.  Qi travels along these meridians to energize, nourish, replenish and support every cell, tissue, muscle, organ and gland in our body.  Meridians reflect any pathological disturbances and are a convenient tool for diagnosis and treatment of a variety of conditions.

From a Western medicine point of view, there are three main mechanisms to explain acupuncture's effects: Activation of opioid systems; Changes in brain chemistry, sensation, and involuntary body functions; Changes in blood flow.

Is Acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is extremely safe.  It is an all-natural, drug-free therapy, yielding no side effects except feelings of relaxation and well-being.  Acupuncture needles are safe because they are sterile, used only once, and then discarded.  Possible side effects, though rare,  may be soreness, bruising, or minor bleeding.

The sensation caused by an acupuncture needle varies.  Some people feel a little pain as the needles are inserted but many feel no pain at all.  The depth of the insertion varies depending on body structure and condition.
